A Sneak Peak Into the Life of the Average Bus Conductor

The life of a bus conductor in the African context is not an easy one. Long hours, cramped spaces, and dealing with a variety of passengers can be both mentally and physically challenging. However, it’s also a job that many people find rewarding and fulfilling.

For those who are not familiar with the role, you see them in the famous black and yellow color that is often associated with Lagos buses. They’re responsible for collecting bus fares. 

You can also find them in  BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) buses, where they issue tickets, and generally ensure that passengers act accordingly. 

They are also responsible for assisting passengers with any questions or concerns they may have, as well as keeping the bus clean and tidy.

One of the most challenging aspects of being a bus conductor is dealing with difficult passengers. 

From those who refuse to pay their fare to those who become aggressive or abusive, it’s important for conductors to remain calm and professional at all times. 

They must also be able to communicate effectively with passengers who may not speak the local language of the city they operate in or have hearing impairments.

In addition to dealing with passengers, bus conductors also have to deal with the physical demands of the job. They are often required to stand for long periods of time, and the constant movement of the bus can take a toll on their bodies. 

Conductors must also be able to lift and carry heavy items such as luggage,tools, food stuffs e.g bag of fufu,pepper,e.t.c  

Also they have to contend with harassment from street touts (Agberos).

Despite these challenges, many bus conductors find their work to be incredibly rewarding. They enjoy interacting with passengers and providing them with a safe and comfortable journey. They also take pride in keeping the bus clean and tidy, and ensuring that everything runs smoothly.

Another benefit of being a bus conductor is the sense of community that can develop among the conductor and the driver. and this can create a strong sense of camaraderie and teamwork.

In terms of career growth, there are opportunities for bus conductors to advance to higher positions within the transportation industry. Some conductors may choose to become drivers themselves, while others may move into supervisory or management roles.

Overall, the life of the average bus conductor can be challenging but rewarding. It’s a job that requires patience, resilience, and a passion for helping others. For those who are up to the challenge, it can be a fulfilling and satisfying career.
